At The Sequel Way, we are pleased to launch Parkinson’s Active Pathway, a new 6-week exercise, education and support pilot programme for people living with Parkinson’s Disease in Kerry. The programme has been developed to provide a safe, supportive and structured pathway into exercise, while also helping participants build understanding, confidence and long-term direction around their health and wellbeing.
This pilot will begin on Saturday 30th May and will run for 6 consecutive Saturdays from 11:30am to 1:00pm at The Sequel Way, Unit 11, 4 Park, Farranfore, Co. Kerry, V93 YX7F. It has been developed and funded by The Sequel Way as part of our ongoing commitment to creating meaningful, inclusive and high-quality services for people living with Parkinson’s Disease.
More than a weekly exercise class
Parkinson’s Active Pathway has been designed to be much more than simply a weekly class. It is intended to act as a safe pathway into long-term, progressive and sustainable exercise, while also giving participants access to education, discussion, peer support and lived experience.
Each weekly session will include:
- 60 minutes of structured exercise
- 30 minutes of guided discussion, education and Q&A
By combining exercise, information and support, the programme aims to help participants make more informed decisions around their health and wellbeing, while supporting improved health outcomes over time.
What the programme will include
Throughout the 6 weeks, the Active Pathway will combine:
- Structured and tailored exercise
- Education and information
- Q&A and discussion
- Peer support
- Lived experience
- Guidance towards long-term sustainable physical activity
- A strong focus on supporting improved health outcomes
The overall aim is to provide a foundation level of support for people who may be looking for an appropriate, supportive and confidence-building way to engage with exercise.
Lived experience at the heart of the pilot
A key part of this programme will involve Fred O’Sullivan, who will assist in delivery and support throughout the pilot. Fred lives with Parkinson’s himself and joined The Sequel Way’s Parkinson’s Fit class almost two years ago. Since then, he has progressed into wider inclusive exercise and is now a staff member of The Sequel Way.
His involvement brings an important lived-experience element to the programme and will help create a practical, encouraging and supportive environment for participants. Fred will also share his own journey and the benefits he has experienced from using exercise as a tool to help manage Parkinson’s Disease.
Weekly programme structure
The pilot has been designed around six focused weekly themes:
Week 1 – Introduction to Parkinson’s Active Pathway and Fred’s lived experience
An introduction to the programme, what participants can expect, and Fred’s own journey with exercise and Parkinson’s.
Week 2 – Medication timing, exercise timing and daily routine
A discussion around routine, energy levels and how exercise may fit within day-to-day management.
Week 3 – Fatigue, energy management and building consistency
A focus on understanding fatigue and learning how to approach exercise safely and effectively on both good and difficult days.
Week 4 – Strength, balance, mobility and confidence
An opportunity to better understand why these areas matter and how exercise can support confidence, independence and day-to-day function.
Week 5 – Lifestyle habits that support better health outcomes
A wider look at sleep, hydration, stress management, nutrition, recovery and supportive routines.
Week 6 – Long-term planning and next steps
A reflection on progress and how participants can continue engaging in safe, progressive and sustainable exercise beyond the pilot.
A welcoming and supportive environment
As part of the programme, tea, coffee, scones and sandwiches will be provided free of charge following each session, giving participants an opportunity to stay, relax, chat and connect with others in a welcoming and supportive setting.
